Scope of Business Law
Business law, also known as commercial law, is a general term that contains a large number of topics within it. Broadly, it is the body of laws that regulate commercial and business actions, but there are more specific areas of influence.
Business law can be considered to contain the following areas:
- Corporate contracts
- Hiring regulations
- Manufacture and sale of consumer goods
- Protecting customers and businesses
It also deals with such fields as merchant shipping, guarantees, various types of insurance (including fire, life, accident, and business), and the like.
In the United States, commercial law is regulated on both the national and state level. Interstate commerce is regulated by the U.S. Congress, and individual states can control business law and regulation within their own borders.
Many attempts have been made to standardize business laws, but there has not been a complete solution as of yet. The Uniform Commercial Code is an agreement that comes close to standardization, although it is imperfect because each state’s legislature is allowed to make changes before passing the law, thereby making the supposedly uniform law significantly less consistent.
